Role of attP in integrase-mediated integration of the Shigella resistance locus pathogenicity island of Shigella flexneri.
The Shigella resistance locus (SRL) pathogenicity island (PAI) in Shigella spp. mediates resistance to streptomycin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. It can be excised from the chromosome via site-specific recombination mediated by the P4-related int gene. Here, we show that SRL PAI attP is capable of RecA-independent, site-specific, int-mediated integration into two bacterial tRN...
متن کاملFulminating encephalopathy associated with Shigella flexneri infection.
Three cases of rapidly fatal encephalopathy associated with Shigella flexneri infection are reported. There was a lack of severe intestinal involvement and absence of metabolic derangement. In all 3 patients, areas of necrosis were present throughout the brains; and in one case pontine haemorrhages and demyelination were seen. This report supports the evidence of a particular neurotoxic effect ...
متن کاملExcision of the Shigella resistance locus pathogenicity island in Shigella flexneri is stimulated by a member of a new subgroup of recombination directionality factors.
Pathogenicity islands are capable of excision and insertion within bacterial chromosomes. We describe a protein, Rox, that stimulates excision of the Shigella resistance locus pathogenicity island in Shigella flexneri. Sequence analysis suggests that Rox belongs to a new subfamily of recombination directionality factors, which includes proteins from P4, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, and Y...
متن کاملThe Salmonella selC locus contains a pathogenicity island mediating intramacrophage survival.
Pathogenicity islands are chromosomal clusters of horizontally acquired virulence genes that are often found at tRNA loci. The selC tRNA locus of Escherichia coli has served as the site of integration of two distinct pathogenicity islands which are responsible for converting benign strains into uro- and enteropathogens. Because virulence genes are targeted to the selC locus of E.coli, we invest...
متن کاملKeratitis due to Shigella flexneri.
Multiresistant Shigella flexneri isolates were cultured from the cornea and stool of a girl. Genetic analysis showed the isolates were identical. Shigella spp. are rare causes of ulcerative keratitis; there have only been 14 published cases since 1943. Although prognosis after local treatment is good, shigellosis is a systemic infection, possibly leading to dehydration.
